COVID-19, VPNs, and Zero Trust: The Future of Secure Remote Access

To address the COVID-19 pandemic, government agencies surged their reliance on VPNs to enable the massive shift to remote work. But, security, cost, and performance concerns will make it doubtful that VPNs should remain the technical linchpin of secure remote work. At the same time, with the growing cyber risk environment, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense have signaled the criticality of Zero Trust for better cybersecurity, complementing prior guidance from NIST, and new guidance from the National Security Agency.
